The starter motor is a compact electric unit responsible for starting the engine of your Linhai 550 or 600 ATV. It connects to the battery via a power cable and is controlled by the starter relay, which in turn is activated by the starter button on the left handlebar switch.
When the button is pressed, the starter engages the engine through the starter clutch, also known as the one-way bearing, mounted on the alternator rotor. Once the engine fires, the clutch automatically disengages, stopping the starter to prevent unnecessary wear.
Troubleshooting and Inspection
If the starter fails to operate or turns the engine too slowly, several issues may be at fault. Begin by checking the battery’s charge level, as low voltage can prevent the engine from cranking. Then test the starter button on the handlebar, followed by the starter relay, which acts as a switch between the battery and the starter motor.
If all these components function correctly, the issue likely comes from the starter itself. It is also important to check the starter clutch. If the clutch remains engaged after the engine starts, it continues to drive the starter and can cause severe damage within seconds. Always inspect this part before installing a new starter.
Replacing the Starter Motor
Replacing the starter motor on a Linhai ATV is a simple process. Start by disconnecting the battery. Remove the two mounting bolts of the starter with a 5 mm Allen key, then gently pull the starter out of the engine casing. Lightly lubricate the O-ring before refitting.
When installing this compatible replacement model, it may be necessary to slightly ovalize the mounting holes to ensure proper alignment and fit on the engine block. This small adjustment can be done easily with a file or drill and does not affect the reliability or strength of the installation.
Reinstall the starter motor, reconnect the ground wire to one of the bolts, and tighten both bolts to about 1 m.kg of torque.
